The " Sgabello " seat originally from Rennaisance Italy would normally have been heavily carved and often partly painted with flora and armorial designs had been adapted in the early eighteenth century to suit the English fashion and taste .

Referenced in Chippendale`s Director - many of the leading designers including Gillows Lancaster - William Kent - Sheraton and numerous others adapted the original design to their particular nuanced style .

It is worth noting examples of the English Sgabello can be observed at many of our great houses - including the noted Dumfries House .
