Rare Pair of English Finely Carved Cuban Mahogany Gainsborough Drawing Room Chairs , each having the most glorious original surface with outstanding patination and colour.       

 Of note is the high standard of professional carving typical of the  Paul Saunders workshop a contemporary of Thomas Chippendale  . Like Chippendale his commissions were for the aristocratic and wealthy only .

 One from the collection of Graham Watson 1908-2002 Yorkshire -one time owner of the largest silk factory in the world ( Manningham Mills ) . Noted for his fine collection of Gillows furniture he purchased this chair from the doyen of antique dealers Lumb and Co Antiques Harrogate, ( supplier of period Georgian furniture to serious collectors and museums ) .The history of the second chair which is vague, almost certainly from the same suite was purchased in the North not too far from Yorkshire and was fortunately reunited with its mate
